IS the Mac really cheaper?

Why is it that every time someone tries to write an article the claims to be free of bias and that really tries to see if indeed Intel based machines are cheaper then any machine Apple makes, it always fails to do what it claims. Unfortunately, this somewhat interesting perspective into the discussion fails exactly were others fail: bias. I know the author never really stated he was trying to set up an unbiased comparission, but his whole introduction to the posting is trying to set up credability of such. This base is quickly removed however when the author starts comparing processors. While yes I know that processor frequency does not translate into performance that doesn’t mean that the G5 is therefore the best processor. There’s deffinately a lot more research that needs to be done.

  • AMD processors ever since the K7, while having a CISC interface have a RISC core.
  • While the G5 is a 64-bit processor Mac OS X didn’t support 64-bit natively untill Tiger. Windows beat them to punch by five days with support for 64-bit x86.
  • The G5 is not opperating in a 64-bit consumer vaccum - AMD Opteron and AMD Athlon 64 have existed ever since the G5 was available for sale, and just recently Intel released the Pentium 4 6xx series with support for 64-bit - the last of which should be available from Dell.
  • CRT’s are still the best for video quality, though LCD’s are catchin up fast.

Personally I was able to configure systems at Dell that were as good the equivalent Apple ones in the article for much less then what the article had. Also on another note, I think Microsoft would have been in bigger trouble had it been bundling all theses other applications with Windows. Imagine the Anti-trust suite if Windows came with an Online Music Store, a photo application… Also, I don’t think every system sold should come with a personal web server! That’s just a bad Idea.
